Mistakes at pond-number nine are an embarrassment to Sunriver
By Susan A Manganaro, P.E.
and Richard Jaccarino
Sunriver Environmental has
produced a disgraceful transformation of Woodlands Pond #9.
Three years ago, without
notification to affected owners,
Environmental began a lining
project for the pond.
At the time, in the absence
of reasonable owner disclosure,
it was incorrectly assumed that
normal leaching to the porous
volcanic subsurface was suspected of being a risk to drinking
water quality.
Environmental botched the
project by altering the lining
contract to lining less than 80%
of the surface area.
To cover up their failed
project, Environmental compounded their error by adding
truckloads of weed infused soil
to the pond’s perimeter nearest
the homes of owners, while preserving the perimeter adjoining
the golf course.
Consequently, noxious weeds
are present on the pond’s pe-
rimeter and on the expanded
islands, now frequented by
visiting children.
Also, it was learned that the
project’s rationale was never related to water quality,
but actually to support Environmental’s commercial
composting program.
No nuisance can be
justified to support a
commercial venture.
Pond #9 has been left stagnant, algae and insect fouled
and the intended wastewater
purification and reuse function
abandoned.
This is a nuisance and an
embarrassment to Sunriver.
Safety measures need to be addressed in Sunriver, including crosswalks

When I think about SROA
and the governing board, I
(and possibly you) would
hope that the safety of all
residents and visitors is the
primary concern.
Just look at the beautiful police and fire building completed recently, surely a statement
that police and fire are a big
presence and importance in
Sunriver.
However, try to find a crosswalk that goes to the entrance
of the new owner’s pool—opps
not so new, about 10 years
old now.
I was told there are no funds
for that crosswalk.
However, it’s needed as
almost all pool users cross the
road at that entrance.
And cars do not slow down
due to lack of a crosswalk.
Furthermore, I was also told
that there are no funds for bike
paths along Meadow Road.
Rather that I should call
my neighbors and ask them
to contact the board about
the lack of paths, because the
board listens to more than just
one person: me.
Surely the board must be
already aware of the danger.
Besides, I have contacted
past boards four times about
my concern.
Safety, however, is the issue
here, and the board should
act now, before very serious
accidents happen!
