Two exciting author events in October and November at Sunriver Books
By Deon Stonehouse
There are two exciting author
events in October and November at Sunriver Books in The
Village at Sunriver.
In October, Helene Wecker
will present her new book, and
in November, my favorite cowboy Craig Johnson returns with
a real treat for the holidays, a
new Longmire book. Wecker
and Johnson are both extraordinarily talented wordsmiths.
Wecker will present “The
Gates of Midnight” at 5 p.m.
Oct. 10. The book is the third
in her trilogy featuring “the
Golem and the Jinni.” Wecker’s
books are an absolute delight
because they have swashbuckling adventures, the secrets of
centuries, a compelling story
and likable characters.
Chava, the Golem, and Ahmid, the Jinni, met on a dark
night walking the streets of
New York City. A woman
made of clay recognized a man
made of fire, and a friendship
was born. It is safest, for all
concerned, that Chava and
Ahmed keep their true being
secret, while anonymously
cloaked in human form. They
have a few humans who guide
them as they blend in as best
they can. This leaves them in a
world difficult to navigate surrounded by humans they don’t
understand. With each other,
they could talk openly, didn’t
need to conceal their identity.
As their relationship grew
throughout the series, they endured hard times and tragedies
intervened, and they now live
apart. Chava is in Brooklyn,
leading a quiet life tending
her garden and baking while
Ahmed is in Chicago working
as an architect. They defeated
the evil wizard, Shaalman, who
meant them harm.
Or have they? True, 30 years
ago they trapped him in a flask
and buried him in a remote
part of a Middle Eastern desert.
But flasks can be dug up, even
the remotest part of the desert
might be stumbled into by an
unwary human lured by the
deceptive ways of a powerful
and desperate wizard.
Unbeknownst to Chava and
Ahmed, as 1929 turns into
1930, there is trouble brewing.
The country is going into an
economic depression, and a
wicked wizard intends to have

book 'Have Courage' in November.
his revenge. It is great fun to
spend time with Chava and
Ahmed! Who can resist a Jinni?
I certainly don’t intend to.
There will be drawings for
prizes and refreshments. Register at sunriverbooks@sunriverbooks.com to attend this

Craig Johnson
An internationally best-selling author of the Longmire
series, Johnson returns to
Sunriver to introduce his new
book at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5.
“Have Courage” is a series of
15 entertaining short stories,
a perfect holiday gift and the
right book to read in the season!
There will be refreshments and
drawings for prizes. Pre-purchase a copy of “Have Courage” from Sunriver Books for
a ticket to attend this excellent
event! Johnson has been a loyal
friend to Sunriver Books since
our first year. We are grateful
to him for his support, loyalty
and friendship over the years.
Johnson is not only a talented
author, but he is also a special
and a truly nice person. He
always puts on a good show!
“Have Courage” opens with
“Warms You Twice,” a short
story featuring Sheriff Lucian
Connelly teaching a young
recruit, Walt Longmire, a thing
or two about law enforcement.
It is Christmas Eve and Walt
should be going home to his
young bride, but Lucian has
different ideas. He invites Walt
to go along for a ride with him,
way out into the snowy Wyoming night. Things have got
the potential to be explosive,
although Walt is comfortably
unaware of that possible outcome. I enjoy reading about
Lucian educating a young Walt,
see how that relationship develops and the tricks he has up his
sleeves. Most entertaining. And
that is just the start, there are 14
more stories, all good reading.
“Angel Shot with a Twist”
is the concluding story, and
fittingly also includes former
Sheriff Lucien Connelly. Sheriff
Walt Longmire is called to an
altercation at a bar, the man
involved has secrets, they connect back to the time Lucien
was sheriff. It is a perfect mix
of comedy and tragedy.
The book is a treasure trove
of stories. Prepurchase “Have
Courage” and be set to enjoy an entertaining evening
with Johnson!
