Last year’s sale benefitted

A task for everyone
Folding brown paper boxes,
Purcell recalled it was 10 years
ago when Andi asked her to
volunteer.
“She fired me from bow tying,” Purcell shared, laughing,
“then she appointed me to
publicity.
“I am not a cook, so that’s
why I am folding boxes for
the cookies baked by the volunteers. This event is about
everyone doing what they can
to benefit the community. We
each play a role.”
Floyd said there are countless
ways volunteers and community members make the event
possible. Besides participating
in work parties, volunteers
make items at their home, paying for the cost of the materials
themselves. Phil Northcote
makes 400 chocolate chip
cookies. Henderson makes
several dinner items including
lasagnas, soups and chilis.
Mack sews items, including her
Ingredients:
24 unbaked frozen yeast dinner roll dough
13-oz package regular butterscotch pudding mix (NOT
instant)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup melted butter
1/2-1 tsp cinnamon
kitchen shawls.
Floyd recruits her neighbors
and friends to store items in
their freezers.
“There are more than 150
people who volunteer their
time and talent for the event,”
Floyd said.
She recruited her golf partner
Carol Barrett, who is a firsttime volunteer.
“I love the fact all these folks
are coming together to help the
local community,” Barrett said.
“I am here to support Ronda
who goes above and beyond to
help the community.”
More than 520 people attended the event last year,
with 200 people standing in
line before the doors opened
at 10 a.m., the first guest to
enter was in line at 8:45 a.m.
Last year, 100 chicken pot pies
sold within less than an hour.
Volunteers have described the
event as having electric energy.
“It feels good to see the joy
and appreciation people have
from the volunteers who make
the items to the people attending the event to the grant
receipts,” Floyd said.
Once the pie filling was
done, volunteers scooped it
into pie tins. Volunteers carefully tucked a blanket of pie
dough around the filling and
added a cut out chicken made
of dough, then the pies were
wrapped in plastic and placed
in the freezer.
While each volunteer’s task
varies, they have a shared vision for doing what they do,
carrying on a tradition started
“I think the secret ingredient is helping others in need,”
Purcell said.
Directions:
The night before, generously grease a tube pan.
Sprinkle chopped nuts into the bottom of the pan.
Place the frozen rolls in the pan, around and on top of
each other and over the nuts.
Sprinkle the dry pudding mix over the rolls.
In a small saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar
and cinnamon.
Stir and heat over medium-low until combined.
Drizzle the melted butter mixture over the rolls.
Cover the dough with a lightly damp tea towel or loosely
with a piece of plastic wrap.
Allow the dough to rise overnight at room temperature
for 8-12 hours.
Bake at 350F for 22-25 minutes.
Remove from pan and let cool for 5 minutes.
Turn pan over and invert onto serving plate.
Serve by pulling apart chunks with a fork.
Monkey Bread is a favorite recipe of the volunteers of
Visions of Sugarplums.
