public safety
With summer arriving, don't let your guard down
By Jim Bennett
We’re here, it’s summer! As
everyone knows, the summer
months in the high desert
and especially in Sunriver are
full of sun, fun, family time,
recreation, vacations, outdoor
activities and so much more.
Your focus should be on all
of those great things with a
dose of fire and personal safety
running in the background, so
your summer is as great and safe
as it can be.
In May, Deschutes County
conducted its planned test
of the Deschutes Alerts system. This is a valuable tool in
our county’s communication
strategy for reaching community members instantaneously
during a localized or large-scale
emergency event. If you have
not signed up for the alerts, now
is the time.
Also, as we move or change
numbers or emails, it is a good
time to update your information. Go to deschutesalerts.
org to sign up or update
your information.
In Sunriver, we also have our
own local specific alerts system,

be prepared, stay informed and steps for evacuation
Sunriver Emergency Alerts. It
is important for Sunriver community members to sign up for
both alert systems.
You can sign up for the
Sunriver Emergency Alerts by
texting SRALERTS to 888777
or learn more and sign up by
going to sunriveremergency

Information during an actual
emergency will come from the
Sunriver Service District (police
and fire), Deschutes County,
local media and more.
There are various sources of additional information
out there to give you additional real-time information for
those who want to know

JUNE 2026 SUNRIVER SCENE
SSD monthly board meetings
The Sunriver Service District (SSD) Board met after the
Scene's deadline. It holds its regular monthly meetings on
the third Thursday of each month at 1 p.m. If you would
like to review the board's actions in May, visit www.sunriver
sdor.gov to read the board's minutes.
Community participation is welcomed and encouraged.
A public comment period is offered at the beginning of each
meeting, giving residents the chance to share their input
directly with the board members. Meetings are held at the
Sunriver Public Safety Building, Seator Hall, 57475 Abbot
Drive, and are also accessible remotely through Microsoft
Teams for added convenience.
The agenda, board packet of materials, Teams link, and
additional meeting information are posted in advance and
always available at www.sunriversdor.gov.
more about it.
The Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center website
is the behind-the-scenes hub
that coordinates wildland fire
response across our public lands
in Central Oregon.
For residents, it is a one-stop
window into current fire danger
levels, Industrial Fire Precaution
Levels, fire season declarations,
public use restrictions, red flag
warnings, and active incident
information, giving Sunriver
community members a deeper
look at the conditions our local
firefighters are operating under
every day.
CentralOregonFire.org is the
official news feed for wildfire
and prescribed fire activity
throughout the region. It is a
fast way to get authoritative
updates on incidents like active
wildfires, prescribed burns,
smoke impacts, and seasonal fire restrictions, all writ-
ten by the agencies managing
the response.
The Watch Duty app, available in both the Apple App
Store and Google Play store,
provides information specifically on fires, updating information as conditions change.
This should not be viewed as
the official notification channel
for evacuations and important
safety information in Deschutes
County and Sunriver, that is
what Deschutes Alerts and
Sunriver Emergency Alerts are
for, but it provides great information for those looking for
additional details.
Finally, a brief switch from
hot to cold, fire to water.
The Deschutes River is flowing, in some areas fast, as it
winds its way not only through
Sunriver but our volcanic forests. While it is warming up,
