Everyone is invited to the annual International Picnic on July 4
By Ruth Kinane
It is hard to believe that
50 years have passed since
I watched a fireworks display in Hawaii celebrating
the bicentennial celebration
of Jefferson’s response to King
George III’s invasion of the
Thirteen Colonies.
We, also known as The International 4th of July Picnic
Mob, are unable to supply
fireworks but, we can supply
the camaraderie of a group of
Americans who understand
and appreciate in a special
way the gift that Jefferson and
associates bestowed upon us
This year is special as it represents a semi-quincentennial
of that event and gives an even
greater than usual reason to
celebrate the Fourth of July.
I recently read Rick Atkinson’s “The Fate of the Day,” an
account of the Revolutionary
War, and I am reminded of the
sacrifices of the Continental
Army and state militias to
ensure the “Declaration of
Independence” would be valid
250 years later.
Central Oregon is home to
many people from throughout
the United States, but also to
many who live or have lived in
countries around the world. As
expats, veterans or emigrants to
the United States with a home
in the Sunriver area, these are
people that have found something special here and bring
their unique multicultural
knowledge and perspectives
with them.
Once a year, we have a chance
to gather and share our appreciation for our experiences
abroad and in the United States
at the annual International
Picnic. All folks who have lived
abroad or would like to mingle
with those that have are en-
couraged to join the gathering.
The picnic is from noon to
3 p.m. at Mary McCallum
Owners Park.
Be sure to bring your SROA
Member Preference ID card
or the current code to proceed
through the gate. We will keep
an eye open for those who
need help.
Look to your right for international flags hanging around
the shelter and proximal trees.
Participants are asked to
bring their own table service,
drinks and main course (there
are no grills available) and a side
dish, salad or dessert to share.
There are a few picnic tables
for displaying the food. We
recommend folding chairs to
encourage mobility within and
between chat groups.
Again, this year, we would
like to extend a warm welcome
to our stalwart ex or active
service personnel who have experienced a tour of duty outside
of the continental USA - Army,
Navy, Air Force, Marines,
Space Force and Coast Guard.
Please leave your politics
home for the day. No charge
is involved, and no RSVP is
necessary. Contact t_kinane@
