Virtual horse racing and more at Rotary’s High Desert Derby fundraiser
By Lee Haroun
Join us on June 13, 5:30
p.m. at SHARC for the Rotary Club of Sunriver-La Pine’s
annual fundraiser. All proceeds will be donated to south
Deschutes County nonprofits
to assist with their work and to
fund scholarships for La Pine
High School graduates.
The evening will include a
three-course gourmet dinner,
virtual horse racing, silent and
live auctions, live horses and a
festive derby hat contest.
The virtual horse racing will
give guests an opportunity to
have fun selecting from 10
horses to bet on running for an
assigned nonprofit including
Care and Share Community
Outreach, Family Access Network Foundation and SMART
Reading. Guests can designate
donations directly to the organizations most meaningful
to them.
Dinner is catered by Bend’s
popular Bleu Bite. Appetizers
will be passed around while
guests socialize and look over
the silent auction items. Artichoke cakes, crostini with
brie, and caprese skewers will
be offered.
Dinner choices include three
entrées: Black Butte Porter tri
tip, cedar salmon or stuffed
portobello mushrooms. Each
meal includes vegetable side
dishes, strawberry shortcake
and hosted wine.
Visit www.sunriver-lapinerotary.org to purchase tickets and
for additional information.
Local food bank seeks volunteers to assist in gathering cans and bottles
side of the store. This volunteer
activity takes only an average
of 30 minutes each day and is
easy to learn. It is not necessary
to feed all the cans and bottles
into the machine. We have a
special location in the back of
the store, and only glass needs
to be fed into the machine.
If you live in the area and are
around most of the time, this
could be a great way for you
to help our community. If you
do travel some, substitutes are
available when you are away.
At the present time, due to
someone leaving the area and
someone on a leave of absence
for a while, two more “redeemers” are desperately needed. In
addition, the coordinator is
leaving the area, and we need
someone to fill that position.
The coordinator basically just
keeps track of who is doing
which day, can assist with
finding a substitute, and has
some communication with the
Bottle Drop in Bend. It is not a
time-consuming volunteer job.
This mission makes thousands of dollars each year to
support the food bank. If you
think this could be a meaningful outreach for you, please
contact Mark or Cindy at mcconn@me.com and learn how
you can help.

Care and Share, the Sunriver
area local food bank, distributes
food to families in need once a
month. This amazing outreach
is supported by donations
from the community – donations of money, food and
volunteer time.
One of the major contributors to Care and Share is the
cans and bottles collection
point at the Marketplace (north
store) in Sunriver. Every day a
volunteer redeems the cans and
bottles left in the bin on the east
