Explore Sunriver to discover its art galleries and events
By Jim Fister
With the arrival of June,
Sunriver is in full swing, with
plenty of visitors and part-time
residents joining our ranks to
enjoy the beauty and activities
in the area.
Summer in Sunriver is always a vibrant time, and the
local galleries will contribute
with fine art, with something
for everyone.
Betty Gray Gallery
Kristina Zieglar is a landscape photographer based in
Bend, where she has lived for
more than 30 years.
As a young child, she loved
visiting the woods near her
home in Illinois and staring
up at the night sky. This led to
many adventures hiking, backpacking, climbing mountains
and international travel.
Zieglar started seriously pursusing photography upon her
retirement in 2016.
She has specialized in what
is called “astro landscape photography.” Her aim in her
photography of the night sky
is to combine the scientific,
artistic and spiritual aspects of
studying and photographing
scenes that many people are
unable to see.
She has introduced many
people to the wonders and
magic of the night sky, both
through her photography and
teaching. Zieglar will be featured in the upstairs gallery
at the Betty Gray Gallery at
the Sunriver Lodge through
the summer.
Downstairs, the gallery features a show from new artist
Rebecca Howland. As a selftaught painter Howland draws
inspiration from the natural
world, bringing vignettes of
imagination to life through her
artwork. Her show is a wide
variety of her work in small
formats, and features several
styles of art.
McGrath Green Gallery
Come indoors to see the
great outdoors at Sunriver’s
Nancy McGrath Green Gallery.
Plein Air Painters of Oregon
(PAPO) presents “Stories of
Our Favorite Places: Landscapes From the Heart” exhibit
through June.
The gallery, inside Sunriver
Christian Fellowship, is open
weekdays, 1 to 4 p.m. and
directly after church service on
Sunday. The church is at 18139
Cottonwood Road in Sunriver.
Art in the Circles
If you are biking Sunriver,
a 6.5-mile loop features four
Sunriver galleries that are open
weekdays – located from Circle
1 to Circle 10: At the northernmost point, Nancy McGrath
Black Butte pastel by Kristine Finfer can be viewed at the
McGrath Green Gallery at Sunriver Christian Fellowship.
Green Gallery presents its plein
air show. In the Village, Artists’
Gallery Sunriver features a wide
range of media, from paintings
and sculptures to ceramics and
mixed media pieces by members of the artists collective.
Sunriver Public Safety Building
Gallery is showing artists Jim
Fister and Barb Gonzalez. At
the southern end of the loop,
Betty Gray Gallery offers its
two shows. Enjoy the summer
with family and friends and
be sure to include art when
exploring Sunriver.
Artist to demo watercolor techniques at Artists’ Gallery Saturday event
Come see a special demonstration of an
exciting new watercolor technique by artist
Dianne Lay on Saturday, June 13 from 4 to
7 p.m.
The event is free and will be held during
the Artists’ Gallery Sunriver Second
Sa t u rd a y a r t i s t re c e p t i o n i n T h e
Village at Sunriver.
Lay’s approach sets aside the traditional
brush, instead using water, a spray bottle and
simple plastic cards to move and shape pigment across the paper.
The process invites an element of unpredictability, producing loose, spontaneous, and
often abstract designs.
“What draws me to this method is its sense
SUMMER WITH
of play and discovery,” Lay said. “Rather than
controlling every mark, I work in partnership
with the materials, allowing the image to
emerge organically. Each piece becomes a
unique expression.”
Artists’ Gallery is in building 19 in The Village at Sunriver. Visit www.artistsgallerysunriv
er.com or the gallery for more information.
