Sunriver Women’s Club members shine a light on National Children’s Day
June is an opportunity for
communities everywhere to
celebrate and uplift one of the
most precious resources – their
children. In a tradition dating
back to the 1850s, National
Children's Day is observed
in the United States on the
second Sunday in June – June
14 – and is joined globally
by International Children's
Day on June 1.
Regardless of dates or names,
these observances share the
same spirit: children are not just
the future, they are the present.
And they deserve the full attention, advocacy and care of their
communities – right now.
Here in Sunriver, the Sunriver
Women's Club has long understood that investing in children
is among the most meaningful
things a community can do.
For club members, that spirit
of care and commitment is
reflected year-round through
their multitude of philanthropic
efforts dedicated to supporting
the education and development
of area children.
Year after year, the club’s
Community Grant Program
shines a light on local children
by supporting programs that
meet them where they are –
academically, emotionally and
physically – and helps them
build the confidence and life
skills they need to thrive.
The club’s commitment to
local children includes awarding grants to a wide range
of programs.
For example, between 2023
and 2025, the club awarded a
total of $105,586 to the South
County Collaborative through
two targeted grants, which were
then supplemented by the Oregon Department of Education.
These funded mentoring,
after-school programming,
and family support initiatives
give at-risk students in south
Deschutes County a stronger
path to high school graduation and beyond. In 2026, a
variety of smaller grants were
awarded that ranged from early
literacy initiatives that place
books directly into young hands
(SMART Reading) to mentoring relationships that provide
steady guidance through the
challenges of adolescence (Big
Brothers Big Sisters, Friends of
the Children Central Oregon).
T h e s e c o m m u n i t y i nvestments extend beyond
the classroom.
Safe, enriching out-of-school
programs give children space
to learn, play and grow, while
hands-on work experiences
introduce older youth to future career pathways and a
sense of purpose (Heart of
Oregon Corps).
At the same time, programs
that support physical activity,
emotional well-being and peer
connection help young people
build resilience and navigate
life’s challenges with confidence
(Girls on the Run).
Together, these efforts reflect
a shared belief: when communities invest in children, they
strengthen the entire community. By continuing to support
opportunities that foster learning, connection and well-being,
club members are helping ensure that every child has the
chance not just to succeed, but
to truly thrive.
