Wildflower Show and Pollinator Festival coming June 27
Celebrate native flowers and pollinators – and the
special connections between them – at the upcoming
Wildflower Show and Pollinator Festival at Sunriver
Nature Center & Observatory (SNCO).
There are more types of flowering plants than all the
species of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals combined.
Each flowering plant species may work with dozens
of insect species for pollination, forming a complex
network that helps support life across the planet.
Flowers are the reproductive structure of angiosperms, the dominant group of plants on Earth today.
Unlike cone-bearing plants, angiosperms produce
seeds enclosed within ovaries that later develop
into fruit.
The seeds, fruits, grains and nuts produced by flowering plants are the source of much of the world’s food.
In fact, the USDA states one in every three bites
of food we eat exists because of pollinators. We can
thank these incredible creatures for contributing to the
reproduction of 75% of the world's flowering plants
and 35% of global food crops.
While many other plants rely primarily on wind
or water for reproduction, flowering plants evolved
extraordinary partnerships with pollinators, including
bees, butterflies, beetles, hummingbirds and bats.
When flowering plants became widespread, they
changed Earth’s ecosystems by connecting plants and
pollinators over millions of years of coevolution.
We invite you to join us in learning about the beauty,
variety and importance of wildflowers and the creatures
that help them thrive.
