A Central Oregon resident,
Kirkpatrick has written many
books telling the stories of real
women who contributed to settling the west. Her books have
helped to save the women’s
accomplishments from being
lost to time.
Her books are carefully researched and historically accurate, portraying the courage
and hard work of women who
made a difference.
Reading one of her books is
an opportunity to learn something of our past while enjoying
a good story.
Set on the Oregon Coast,
“With the Enduring Tides”
tells the story of Mary Gerritse,
a young mother who held a
dangerous job.
Mary’s story begins in “Across
the Crying Sands.”
She wed John when she was
16 years old. From the start,
they faced challenges. The
land they were claiming and
attempting to farm was remote,
isolated and resistant to their
efforts at farming.

A Central Oregon resident, Jane Kirkpatrick is a New York Times best-selling and award-winning
author of more than 40 books and numerous essays.
Mary’s parents had moved
to Oregon from the Midwest.
They were generally protective
of their daughter, oddly her
mother seemed almost relieved
that she was moving so far away
with John. Her mother was a
woman with secrets.
Mary takes a job delivering
the mail along the coast, a job
that entails riding along treacherous cliffs in rainy, slippery
conditions and along beaches
with surging tides.
It is not a job generally held
by a woman and Mary has to
persuade her husband to allow
her employment. The Oregon
Coast is spectacular. Kirkpatrick uses the setting beautifully.
The horses are pretty cool, too.
John is good friends with
Herbert Frank Logan, a second
son from an aristocratic fam-
ily in England. He is heavily
involved in building the road
along the coast, planning to
encourage tourists to visit Cannon Beach and stay at his hotel.
He is a great character! Willing
to help friends, lonesome for
what he left behind, and determined to build a difficult road.
If you have driven the road
along the Oregon Coast, you
have been treated to some of
the most gorgeous scenery on
the planet and can appreciate
the hardship needed to build
the road. The book shares the
history of the Oregon Coast.
“With the Enduring Tides” is
the middle book in the trilogy.
Mary is still delivering the mail
over perilous trails; she is now a
mother with children and aging
parents. An impetuous nature
leads her to make choices that
endanger not only her safety
but puts others at risk. Mary
deserves credit for her perseverance and her bravery.
While things do not always
turn out happily, she dusts
herself off, and keeps on going,
trying to do her best for her
family and friends.
