A mystery within a mystery and a banned book are September’s book club selections
By Deon Stonehouse
September in Sunriver is
when the paths are a little less
crowded and the colors of the
trees are changing, meaning it’s
a nice time to be outside.
Hopefully, the milder weather will help extinguish the
wildfires raging across Oregon
and other western states.
September evenings are perfect for relaxing with a good
book. Our book clubs are discussing two excellent choices.
Book clubs meet on Mondays
via Zoom and in person.
Email sunriverbooks@sun
riverbooks.com to register to
attend a discussion.
Anyone who loves to read
and discuss books is welcome
to attend the meetings.
Mystery Book Club
The Mystery Book Club will
discuss “Marble Hall Murders”
by Anthony Horowitz at 6 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 7 on Zoom and
at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14
at the bookstore.
This new mystery novel by Horowitz is great fun
and it features Susan Rey-
land and Atticus Pund from
“Magpie Murders.”
Susan left a sun-drenched
Greek island for rainy London.
She is delighted to be back
in the world of publishing, but
affording a home has meant
taking on a mortgage and
needing income.
So far, she is only working
as a freelance editor, but if she
agrees to take on the assignment of editing a new Atticus
Pund mystery, then perhaps a
permanent position will be in
the cards.
The publisher has found a
new author to continue the series and has received permission
from Conway’s heir.
Thus, the reader has two
juicy mysteries! Both full of
twists and clever writing!

Book selection “Bel Canto” by
Ann Patchett.

wrong! If you don’t like a book,
fine, that is your right.
It isn’t anyone’s right to tell
the rest of us that we can’t read
the book!
Banned Book Week is Oct.
4-10.
If you don’t want your child
to read the book, that doesn’t
mean that every other child also
must be denied access.
It is high time we start concentrating on our own lives
including what makes us happy, how we want to spend
our time, and what books
we choose to read, and leave
others to make those choices
for themselves.
“Bel Canto” was banned for
sexual content. Read it and decide for yourself if that reaction
to the story was warranted.
The story begins with an
opera diva, a song, a powerful captain of industry from
Japan, and a birthday party in
South America.
The night goes horribly
wrong when terrorists burst
into the room.

opera diva, enchants both captive and captor. Relationships

are formed along tenuous lines,
and time stands still for a brief
magical moment.
Patchett has written a brilliant story that delves into
the changing relationship of
captors and captives with compassion and insight.
Her writing is absolutely
luminous.
This is my favorite book of
Patchett’s impressive number
of excellent books.
