Prepared Together: Sunriver Women's Club observes National Preparedness Month
Every September, National
Preparedness Month provides
a reminder that small steps
taken today can make a difference when unexpected situations arise. For members of
the Sunriver Women’s Club,
preparedness means being informed, planning and sharing
knowledge that helps strengthen the community.
One member brings a unique
perspective shaped by years
of caring for others. Martha
Sharman, a Sunriver Women's
Club member since 2019 and
a retired family physician, believes preparedness begins with
protecting your health before
an emergency ever occurs.
"One thing people don't
realize is they need to have
their medications on hand and
enough to get through a period
of time," Sharman said.
Whether at home or traveling, she recommends keeping
prescriptions current and readily available, along with having
first-aid kits at home and in
the car.
Her recommended kit includes essentials including a
flashlight, adhesive bandages,
butterfly closures, gauze pads,
cloth tape, an ace wrap, a scarf
or bandana to use as a sling,
pain relievers, antihistamines,
rubbing alcohol or alcohol
wipes, steroid cream, petroleum
jelly, disposable gloves, scissors,
tweezers and a thermometer.

"Those are the basics that
should get you through most
simple medical emergencies
until you can get help if you
need it," she said.
Sharman also emphasizes
that preparedness is about
more than medical supplies.
Every household should have
an up-to-date list of emergency contacts including family members, a close friend, a
physician, poison control, fire,
and police and to keep those
numbers readily accessible on
a cellphone or a notebook. She
also recommends identifying
someone who could help if
a quick evacuation becomes
necessary. For individuals with
mobility limitations or chronic
health conditions, she suggests
having an emergency alert
button, phone or smartwatch
always within reach.
One of the most important
steps anyone can take before an
emergency is knowing where
to find reliable information.
Sunriver Fire Chief Bill Boos
encourages everyone to sign
up for emergency notification
systems so they can receive
timely updates when conditions change.
Whether you're a resident,
seasonal homeowner or visitor,
signing up for emergency alerts
is an important way to stay
informed before and during an
emergency. Anyone spending
time in Sunriver is encouraged
to subscribe to SRALERTS by
texting SRALERTS to 888777
to receive community-specific
updates via text, including severe weather information, road
closures, emergency notifications, and evacuation notices.
Residents also should register
for Deschutes Alerts at www.
deschutescounty.gov/288/
Emergency-Alerts, the county's
official emergency notification
system, to receive emergency
notifications by text, phone
call or email.
"Being informed is one of the
most effective ways to be prepared," Boos said. "Signing up
before an emergency happens
helps ensure you'll receive the
information you need when it
matters most."

Month reminds us, readiness
