WOW is a community-wide
effort to defend the natural
beauty of Sunriver by removing
spotted knapweed on common
property. Spotted knapweed is
a noxious weed that spreads
easily and displaces native
vegetation. Because the best
control method for spotted
knapweed is hand-pulling, the
help of WOW volunteers is
essential to manage this weed
effectively.

treads, for example). These prolific plants produce hundreds
to thousands of seeds per plant
and those seeds can remain viable in Sunriver’s warm, dry soil
for up to ten years. Many years
of pulling in the same locations
is required once a seed bank has
been established.
Many hands make light
work! Over the years, volunteers have reported diminishing weed patches which means
WOW efforts are making
improvements to the Sunriver
landscape. In addition to the
crucial vegetation management
you are a part of as a WOW
volunteer, the event presents
an opportunity to explore new
areas of Sunriver, and enjoy
some fresh air and exercise.
WOW is designed to maximize flexibility and autonomy
for volunteers. Resources such
as digital maps, weed-collection
bags, parking passes, and safety
vests are made available to
volunteers at the beginning of
the project period. From there,
volunteers set their own weedpulling schedules, contributing
as many or as few weed-pulling
hours as they can. Participation
could be as simple as bringing
a collection bag and gloves on
your regular morning walking
route.
“Both new and returning
volunteers are welcome,” says
Natural Resources Director,
Patti Gentiluomo. “We are
happy to provide training and
support to our volunteers to
help ensure an enjoyable, productive experience. We truly
appreciate the Sunriver community’s help with controlling
noxious weeds on commons.”
