National relay makes stop at Sunriver Airport before turning East
A national relay, through the
48 contiguous states, honoring
the production of nearly 4,000
Ercoupe aircraft 80 years ago,
passed the "flag" at Sunriver
Airport on June 6.
The relay started at the
First Flight airport at Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina and has
proceeded though the south
and west.
These sturdy little airplanes
have been instrumental in the
development of many aspects
of civil and military aviation,
with more than 1,000 still
flying. They were used to test
rocket-assisted take offs, resulting in the creation of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory.
They were popularly sold in
Macy's and Montgomery Ward
and featured in several movies
and TV shows. Sam Walton
bought one, and flew around
small towns through the Midwest, counting cars along "main
street" and selecting where to
build his Walmart stores.
John Travolta used some of
his early acting money to learn
to fly his own Ercoupe and
eventually got his own jetliner.
Sunriver Airport hosted an
Oregon Pilots Association
meeting that featured the handoff of the relay flag, flown from
California by James Good, to
Chuck Rosenfeld representing
Oregon. The flag was flown on
to Tracy Koberstein of Walla
Walla, Washington.

VBS 'Illumination Station' set for July 13-17
Sunriver Community Bible
Church invites children to
spend a bright week learning,
playing and growing during its
annual Vacation Bible School,
“Illumination Station,” from 9
a.m. to noon Monday, July 13
through Friday, July 17.
The program is open to children who will be age 4 by Sept.
1 through those entering sixth
grade. This year’s theme focuses
on light, how it brightens, illuminates, reflects and reveals,
while helping kids explore Jesus’
question to his disciples, “Who
do you say that I am?”
Throughout the week, participants will discover the message
of John 8:12: “I am the light
of the world. Anyone who
follows me will never walk in
the darkness but will have the
light of life.”

All properties operating as a short-term rental are required
to register annually with Deschutes County for a Certificate
of Authority. Owners are also required to collect and pay the
8% tax from the occupants to the County and file quarterly or
monthly reports. Owners in contract with a property
management company are still required to register directly
with the County. Owners using a third-party booking service
such as Airbnb, are still required to complete reporting
forms.
Effective Sept. 1, 2025, per Deschutes County Code 4.08,
there will be a fee assessed for the issuance of the
Certificate of Authority - new registrations $300; annual
renewals $150.
