by Craig Johnson on July 6 at

6 listening to Johnson's presen-
tation on his latest novel in his

the mouth of a canyon with a
historic ranch house alongside
Crazy Woman Creek, a prime
fishing stream. It is a splendid
location, attracting wealthy
vacationers with a yen to
play cowboy.
Pepper McKay is a good-looking guy with a knack for causing trouble, especially when it
involves women, money and a
strong drink.
When he married BeeBee
Harris, the ranch came along
with her.
They have two sons, Ian, a
journalist, and Alan, a monk,
and Pepper’s son, David, from
a prior marriage. Then, there
is Manx, his unacknowledged
son. Manx’s mother was Native American; she died when

Pepper’s body is discovered.
A couple of fires are keeping
the firefighters busy and worrying them about the potential
for a convergence.
If his death is a murder,
there will be an abundance of
suspects including his family

whip up a towering conflagration, the danger is fierce
and immediate.
“The Brothers McKay” is
an homage to Fyodor Dosto-
evsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov.” It won’t matter if you
haven’t read Dostoevsky’s book,
“The Brothers McKay” stands
on its own, but if you have, it
is great fun to spot the echoes.
