Women’s civic leadership: 250 years of service and community impact
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in
2026, communities across the
country are reflecting on the
people whose dedication and
service have helped build and
sustain our democracy. Among
them are generations of women
whose civic contributions have
strengthened neighborhoods,
expanded opportunities and
improved lives.
From the earliest days of the
nation, women played vital
roles in community life. They
organized schools, supported
families in need, established
charitable organizations and
created networks of volunteers
that addressed local challenges.
Long before women gained
the right to vote, they were
already exercising civic leadership through service and community engagement.
This legacy is alive and well
in Sunriver.
Since its founding in 1972,
the Sunriver Women’s Club
has embodied the spirit of civic
engagement that has characterized women’s contributions
throughout America’s history.
What began as a small group
The exchange of the gavel at the Sunriver Women’s Club’s
2001 installation ceremony represents the organization’s
enduring tradition of civic engagement, philanthropy and
community leadership in south Deschutes County – tradition
that continues today..

grown into an organization of
more than 400 members whose
dedication and generosity have
made the club a powerful force
for philanthropy and community service throughout south
Deschutes County.
Drawing on decades of expe-
rience as educators, healthcare
providers, business leaders,
public servants, entrepreneurs,
community advocates and
more, Sunriver Women’s Club
members demonstrate that
retirement is not the end of
community involvement. Instead, it is often the beginning
of a new chapter of leadership
and service. Their professional
expertise, combined with a
shared commitment to their
community, helps the club
create meaningful and lasting change throughout south
Deschutes County.
Over the years, club members
have contributed countless volunteer hours and raised more
than $1 million to support
local nonprofits, educational
programs, health services, and
community initiatives. The
Sunriver Women’s Club illustrates how civic leadership
often begins at the local level.
Members identify community
needs, build partnerships, organize resources and work collaboratively to create solutions.
Their efforts may not always
make national headlines, but
they have a meaningful and
lasting impact on the lives
of neighbors, families and
future generations.
As America celebrates its
250th anniversary, the milestone offers an opportunity
to recognize that the nation’s
success has been shaped not
only by famous leaders and
historic events, but also by
ordinary citizens who chose
to serve others. By investing
time, talents and resources in
service to others, the Sunriver
Women’s Club continues a
long American tradition of
civic engagement that remains
as important today as it was at
the nation’s founding.
