Thanksgiving: Turning our gratitude into action
As families prepare for a holiday of feasting and reflection,
the Thanksgiving tradition of
giving thanks is more powerful
than ever here in Sunriver.
True gratitude, the kind that
moves beyond words, is not
a feeling to be kept just for
holidays; it is an invitation to
act, especially when so many
of our neighbors are struggling
with hunger. The Sunriver
Women’s Club is poised this
fall to provide support for those
who are hungry in the south
county area.
South Deschutes County faces deepening poverty, limited
resources and a rise in the cost
of living. More than 21% of
residents live below the poverty
line, twice the state average.
Many of our neighbors are seniors on fixed incomes, people
with disabilities, veterans and
working families who simply
cannot make ends meet.
The cost of food has soared,
with groceries increasing more
than 20% since 2021. In rural
towns, where grocery options
are scarce and transportation
is limited, the impact is even
greater. Too often, families
must choose between gas, rent,
medicine or food.
The Sunriver Women’s Club
(SRWC) historically provides
funds to food banks through
the Community Grants Program. To date, the SRWC has
granted more than $1.2 million
to south county nonprofits and
schools. Members also volunteer at The Giving Plate, Care
& Share, Meals on Wheels
and the La Pine Community
Kitchen.
The SRWC turns gratitude
into action through a series
of intentional, meaningful
steps that begin in our own
community. We give time and
funding to nonprofits working
to provide meals, distribute
food and address the root
causes of hunger. As we move
into the last few months of
the year, the SRWC will be
fundraising to end hunger
locally. If you want to join this
quest, donate to the Sunriver

President’s message
After a successful Art Fair in
August, this is the time of year
we support nonprofits serving
south Deschutes County with
the proceeds. Grants are distributed twice a year, and the
fall batch was just announced
(see separate article for details).
As an organization, we are committed to one another and to
our community. Look for the
GivingTuesday launch of the
Power of Giving: End Hunger!
We do both, have fun and
do good. It is hard to believe
that plans for our holiday party,
“Under the Starlit Pines,” are
underway and winter will soon
be here. The club soon starts
winter outdoor activities. The
club is active all year with various opportunities for members
to make friends and have some
fun.
