Observatory to host Twilight Talk about mapping the solar system
When discussing the universe, huge numbers are often
mentioned.
For example, someone might
point to a tiny light known as
the Andromeda galaxy and tell
you – “That cluster of stars is
2.5 million light-years away.”
You may nod or jot it down,
but what does 2.5 million
light-years even mean? Our
minds, which only last for a
tiny, infinitesimal fraction of
a light year, struggle to grasp
such huge distances and times.
You can learn more about
how we measure distances in
space at the Sunriver Nature
Center & Observatory’s November Twilight Talk. The talk
will feature observatory resident astronomer, Alex Yeager,
who will explain “How Far Is
That and How Do You Know?”
The talk begins with a happy
hour at 4 p.m., followed by the
presentation starting at 4:30
p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21.
Join us on a journey across
the universe as we explore the
clever ways astronomers mea-
sure distances, from mapping
our solar system to gauging the
vast reaches of distant galaxies
and uncover how we know just
how far away distant objects
truly are.
Yeager specializes in making the universe accessible
and exciting for everyone. He
shares his passion for the night
sky through public programs,
telescope viewing, and engaging presentations. With a
background in STEM education, Yeager helps audiences
understand complex astronomical phenomena in clear
and relatable ways.
