Mosquitoes are buzzing this Spring
any items that hold water such
as clogged gutters, buckets,
flowerpots, birdbaths or anything that can hold standing
water for any length of time.
Getting rid of these sources
will prevent future hatches.
Be sure to change birdbath
water and outdoor pet water
bowls frequently.
• Maintain your yard. Keep
grass and vegetation managed.
Mosquitoes like to rest in shady,
overgrown areas during the day.
• Reduce outdoor attractants. Limit outdoor lighting as it can attract insects,
including mosquitoes.
• Report sightings. This helps
field staff to target treatment areas. Visit fourriversvectorcontrHere’s how you can help:
• Remove standing water oldistrict.com to alert FRVCD
from your property. Check for of where you see activity and
breeding sites.
As temperatures warm, it signals the time of blossoms, birds
and the dreaded mosquito.
Four Rivers Vector Control
District (FRVCD) has witnessed an earlier-than-usual
uptick in mosquito activity
this spring.
Since March, FRVCD has
been in the field taking proactive steps by monitoring activity
levels, conducting larval inspections in waterways and starting
treatment to suppress populations before the summer peak.
They can’t fight this battle
alone. Community involvement plays a role in keeping
mosquitos at tolerable levels.

MAY 2026 SUNRIVER SCENE
Sunriver mosquito control
The FRVCD covers about 20
square miles and stretches from
Benham Falls to the north and
as far south as La Pine State
Park, including Sunriver and
greater Three Rivers area.
Each year, the Sunriver
Owners Association contracts
with the district, which comes
through Sunriver with fog
trucks, helicopter, boat and
on foot to fog and/or apply
larvicide to kill larvae and adultflying mosquitoes.
There is spraying done in adjacent communities and nearby
U.S. Forest Service lands to help
reduce the mosquito population
in and around Sunriver.
While larvicide controls can
be applied at any time, fog
spraying is only effective on
calm evenings between dusk
and dawn when temperatures
remain above 60 degrees.
Spraying is not done during
the day to avoid impacting
beneficial insects such as bees.
Fogging kills flying adult
mosquitoes and assists in intercepting insects flying in from
the surrounding areas.
Unfortunately, a mosquito
can fly 10 to 20 miles looking for a blood meal, which
only the female requires for
egg development to hatch the
next generation.
Mosquitoes usually feed on
flower nectar, juices and decaying matter.
In the end, mosquitoes are
part of the natural environment
and only so much can be done.
Even if Four Rivers Vector
Control was out every day,
there would still be mosquitoes,
but it would be much worse if
they weren't actively treating
the community. Thankfully,
"mosquito season" is generally
over in mid-September.
