Mystery Book Club
Mystery Book Club members will discuss “The Queens
of Crime” by Marie Benedict
May 4, 6 p.m. via Zoom and
May 11, 4:30 p.m. at the bookstore in The Village at Sunriver.
“The Queens of Crime”
combines Benedict’s excellent
historic research with a juicy
mystery from the Golden Age
of mysteries.
The Detection Club was
created in 1930 to up the game
of mystery authors, have a
code of fair play, and hopefully
improve their standing in the
literary world.

is a monk. Then there is the
unacknowledged son, Manx.
His mother was Native
American. She died when he
was a toddler. Manx works on
the ranch, and he has a magic
touch with horses and mules.
The night before Pepper McKay died, his family was embroiled in a
contentious meeting.
Meanwhile, nature is raging.
There are fires not that far away.
If the wind blows the wrong
way, things could go frighteningly awry.
Stay tuned for more on this
event in June.

tie, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio
Marsh, Baroness Emma Orczy and Margary Allingham
were members of the Queens
of Crime.
The men back then didn’t
necessarily give the female
authors as high a regard as
they merited.
The Queens of Crime decided to do something impressive
that the men couldn’t ignore.
They would solve a real
murder, the killing of May
Daniels, a young English nurse
murdered in France.
May was traveling with a
friend, also a nurse, on a brief
holiday from work. As the two
young women headed back to
take the ferry home, Daniels
vanished. Her body was found
months later.
If you enjoy mysteries, this is
fun to read.
Naturally, the women make
great sleuths!
