Get ready to go hiking and solve a mystery with popular visiting authors
By Deon Stonehouse
William Sullivan will present
one of his spectacular slideshow presentations titled “New
Hikes Around Portland” Saturday, May 9 at 5 p.m. at
Sunriver Books in The Village
at Sunriver.
Sullivan’s slideshows are filled
with gorgeous hikes and are
hugely popular.
Register early to attend by
emailing sunriverbooks@sun
riverbooks.com.
There will be refreshments and prize drawings.
Space is limited.
Sullivan’s new release, “50
Hikes: Portland,” is part of his
popular new series of full-color
books. It features hikes and
things to do in Portland, then
branches out to hikes in the
Columbia River Gorge, Mount
Hood and the coast. In addition to hikes, the book includes
wildflowers, dog walks, and
bike trails.
This is the perfect book for
locals, tourists and Oregonians
visiting other parts of the state.
They have great hikes and other
activities, too. Portland is the
nearest big city to Central Oregon, yet it is near a wealth of
natural splendor, a great place
to go visit for a weekend or a
week away, and Sullivan’s guide
will give you the best things to
plan your days out and about.
William Sullivan, left, and Craig Johnson, right, will discuss their work at Sunriver Books.
Special hikes around Oregon
also will be featured in the
slideshow. His well-researched
guidebooks cover all parts of
Oregon and are a mainstay for
Oregon hikers.
You learn about trails you
might want to travel, see places of incredible beauty and
hear interesting details about
our state.
One of the things I appreciate most about Sullivan’s guides
are the way he keeps hiking the
trails, checking to be sure he includes up-to-date information
and shares the best of Oregon’s
trails with his readers.
Sullivan is a fifth-generation
Oregonian who knows the
state intimately and enjoys
sharing his love of the outdoors
with others.
He has a keen appreciation
for the history, geography,
flora and fauna as well as the
jaw-dropping beauty of Oregon’s scenery. We always look
forward to Sullivan’s visits
because he is a witty, entertaining speaker and puts on a
good show.
Craig Johnson returns in
June to Sunriver Books
Craig Johnson visits Sunriver
Saturday, June 6 at 5 p.m.
to present “The Brothers
McKay,” the latest in the
New York Times Bestselling
“Sheriff Longmire” series and
inspiration for the hit TV
drama “Longmire.”
Pre-purchase a copy of
“The Brothers McKay” from
Sunriver Books for a ticket to
attend. Contact Sunriver Books
by phone 541-593-2525 or
email to sunriverbooks@sun
riverbooks.com to arrange the
pre-purchase and ticket.
Johnson is a loyal friend
to Sunriver Books and the
Sunriver community. He is the
star of our lineup and always
puts on an entertaining show.
We are grateful to him.
Only Johnson could write
a brilliant mystery set in Wyoming, make it an homage to
Dostoevsky’s “Brothers Karamazov,” throw in references to Oscar Wilde, Sherlock
Holmes and sundry others,
set it during a raging wildfire,
and have moments that are
laugh-out-loud funny.
Don’t worry if you haven’t read "The Brothers Karamazov,” Johnson’s “Brothers
McKay” definitely stands on
its own, but if you have read
Dostoevsky’s classic, it is great
fun to spot the echoes.
The O-Kay Ranch used to be
a working cattle ranch. For the
past several decades, it has been
a dude ranch, where wealthy
city-slickers get a taste of the
Old West and feel like cowboys
for a while.
BeeBee Harris inherited
the ranch. Pepper McKay, a
good-looking man who liked
women, money, and drink
in whatever order, married
BeeBee Harris.
Sheriff Walt Longmire and
undersheriff Victoria Moretti
are called in when Pepper’s
body is discovered floating in
Crazy Woman Creek.
It could be accident or murder, but if it is murder, the list
of suspects will be long.
Pepper McKay was a hell-raiser, prone to strong drink and a
hound dog around women.
He doesn’t mind if they are
young or married, if they are
female, the guy is interested.
He has a fine collection
of enemies.
Pepper has three acknowledged sons. David, his oldest,
hasn’t fallen too far from the
tree, although he isn’t quite as
careless as his father.
