By Lee Haroun
Rotary Club of Sunriver-La
Pine members invite you to
attend their annual fundraiser,
an activity-filled evening that
includes dinner, virtual horse
racing and auctions.
The fundraiser is Saturday, June 13 at 5:30 p.m. at
SHARC.
This year’s theme is “The
High Desert Derby: An evening of Hats, Horses & Hope.”
Guests will receive a welcome
beverage while viewing silent
auction items.
Shanan Kelley will conduct
the live auction.Her work
focuses on a desire to uplift
others and make a positive difference for individuals and the
community, using humor as a
tool for good. Experiences up
for bidding in the live auction
include a seven-night stay in
Cabo San Lucas, a five-course
gourmet halibut dinner, and a
one-night stay at Willamette
Valley Vineyard.
Virtual horse racing will
give guests an opportunity to
have fun while donating to
Rotary grants to benefit nonprofit organizations in south
Deschutes County. Guests may
select from 10 horses to bet on
for each race. The horses will
run for an assigned nonprofit

supported by a Rotary grant.
The horse-based theme will
include an extra treat. There
will be two live horses in the
parking lot available for photo
ops. Guests can pet and feed
carrots to the horses. Rotary
member and equine veterinarian Doug Anez will be on
hand to answer questions. In
addition, saddles on stands will
be set up for photos.
Inside, there will be a wine
wall. Tickets for the wine raffle
are available from club members and online.
Dinner is catered by Bend’s
popular Bleu Bite. Appetizers
will be passed around while
guests socialize and look at
the silent auction selections.
Artichoke cakes, crostini with
brie and caprese skewers will
be offered to guests. Dinner
choices include three entrées:
Black Butte Porter tri tip, cedar
salmon or stuffed portobello
mushrooms. Each meal includes vegetable side dishes,
strawberry shortcake and hosted wine.
Rotary members hope the
event will be a meaningful and
fun experience for guests. They
will show videos of some of
their grant recipients explaining
their work.
At a recent club meeting,
grant recipients gave presentations about their work.
Joan Craig from the Assistance League of Bend explained
the group’s major project, Operation School Bell. Children
shop at Walmart with a volunteer to select appropriate
clothes and shoes for school.
For some kids, ages 6 to 18,
this will be their first opportunity to select their own clothes
and not wear hand-me-downs.
Students who feel confident
about their appearance have
been shown to have better
attendance rates, academic
success and self-esteem. This is
the Assistance League’s major
project, but they do provide
other help to the community including giving books to
children, providing hygiene
supplies to Medicaid recipients
in nursing homes and making
hats for chemo patients.
Cloe Maike is the development director for Friends of
the Children. This organization
partners one paid professional
mentor with one child with
a 12-year commitment “no
matter what.”
This relationship starts with
children ages 4 to 6 years old
who are living with multiple
challenges, including poverty,
abuse, an incarcerated parent,
or an adult who is using drugs.
The adult provides mentoring, healthy activities and
support for the child with the
goal of breaking the negative
cycle often repeated by adults
who have experienced serious
problems as children.
Maike presented impressive results for children who
participate in the nationwide
program: 83% graduate from
high school, 92% find employment, 93% avoid the juvenile
justice system and 93% avoid
becoming teen parents.
These organizations and
others can continue their work
due to grants and donations
from Rotary.
