Hidden in Plain Sight: An
Introduction to Geocaching
Wednesday, June 10, 1
p.m. at SHARC. Presenter:
Kathie Maier
Discover the adventure of
geocaching, a real-world treasure hunt that combines technology, exploration, and a sense
of fun. If you love to walk, hike,
cycle, and discover new places,
geocaching is for you. Using
GPS coordinates posted on a
phone app, hidden containers
called caches placed by others
in neighborhoods, parks, and
natural areas, can be found
throughout the world. In our
own backyard there are at least
200 caches. You will learn how
geocaching works using popular
apps, basic navigation skills, tips
for finding and hiding caches
responsibly, and making the
experience enjoyable for all
ages. We will begin the class
by setting up the app on your
phone so come prepared with
username options to establish
your handle. We will move
onto logging in, learning how
the website/app works and
geocaching etiquette and safety
before venturing out to find our
first cache.
Maier is a retired teacher
and has been geocaching since
December 2004. On vacation
this past summer she found
her 1,000th cache. She moved
with her wife Sharon to Central
Oregon in 2024 and enjoys
cycling, hiking, painting, reading, technology, travel and, of
course, geocaching.
Fire-Wise Landscaping:
Beauty that Protects
Thursday, June 11, 3–4:30
p.m. SHARC. Presenter: Amy
Jo Detweiler
Wildfire risk is growing in
Central Oregon, but your landscape can be part of the solution. This informative class
introduces the principles of
Fire-Wise landscaping, helping
you create a beautiful, resilient
outdoor space while reducing
fire hazards around your home.
We’ll break down the basics of
the home ignition zone, what
makes some plants fire-resistant
(and others not), and how design and regular maintenance
can make a difference. We’ll also
walk through a few local case
studies and share plant picks
that work well in a fire-wise
landscape. Whether you’re starting from scratch or adapting an
existing yard, this session will
provide clear, actionable steps
to help protect your property
and your community.
