Rotary Club events; remembering long-time member
By Lee Haroun
Rotary Club of Sunriver-La
Pine members would agree that
awarding grants to nonprofit
recipients is a favorite activity.
Knowing they help make a
positive difference in the lives of
their south Deschutes County
neighbors is one of the many
joys of membership.
In February, the club’s foundation board members approved grants for two nonprofit
organizations. The Assistance
League of Bend will purchase
school clothing for children
from low-income families.
Friends of the Children – Central Oregon will use the funds
for materials and supplies for
their individualized tutoring
and literacy interventions for
children in La Pine.
Club members have awarded
22 grants since October 2025.
They included donations to
Rising Stars Preschool in La
Pine, CASA of Central Oregon, Habitat for Humanity of
La Pine Sunriver and La Pine
Community Kitchen. The
community’s support makes
it possible to award grants to
nonprofit organizations serving
south Deschutes County.
Annual fundraiser
The members of the Rotary
Club of Sunriver-La Pine invite
the community to attend The
High Desert Derby – An Evening of Hats, Horses & Hope
starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday,
June 13 at SHARC.
Club member Steffen Schulze
is the chair of the club’s major
fundraiser. Along with the organizing committee, Schulze has
planned a great evening of food,
fun and fellowship.
The event will feature virtual
horse racing, silent and live
auctions, a wine raffle and a
three-course dinner provided
by Bleu Bite Catering.
Guests will receive welcome
drinks and hors d’oeuvres
during the silent auction. Dinner tickets are $125 and can
be purchased along with raffle
tickets at https://thehighdesert
derby.cbo.io.
Honoring longtime member
Club members were saddened to learn longtime member Charlie Beith passed away
in early February.
Beith became a Rotarian in
2002. He served as club president, recruited new members,
attended the 2013 Rotary International Convention in Lisbon,
Portugal and, along with his
wife, Monet, hosted a Rotary
exchange student.
Beith’s background made
participating in a service club
a natural choice. He served in
Vietnam and was decorated
with the Bronze Star three times
for his valor.
He volunteered for the Peace
Corps in Mali, and he was a
board member of the Sunriver
Nature Center & Observatory
for nine years.
A celebration of life will be
held at 1 p.m. Wednesday,
March 4 at the Sons of Norway,
549 NW Harmon Boulevard in
Bend. Memorial donations can
be made to the Sunriver Nature
Center & Observatory.
Charlie Beith was a dedicated community member and Rotarian.
