'Art in the Circles' day hosted by Sunriver's art galleries
By Jim Fister
The relatively mild winter weather is now turning
to spring in Sunriver. We’ve
seen people continue to visit
Sunriver for the fun, winter
events.
As the weather starts to
change, we will see people from
far away and just over the pass
visit the area to wander the
paths and to visit our wonderful art galleries.
The local gallery scene is
coordinating a day of art for
residents and visitors on Saturday, March 14. The Nancy
McGrath Green Gallery, the
Betty Gray Gallery and the
Artists’ Gallery Sunriver will
all participate in the “Art in the
Circles” – which means you'll
travel from Circle 1 to Circle
10 to visit each gallery.
Nancy McGrath
Green Gallery
Guests will enter the Nancy
McGrath Green Gallery by
walking through a yarn storm
to view the fabric art show.
They will be greeted with an
oversized handstitched Julia
Child, an interpretation of a
quilting spider and a woman
inside a fabric frame who escapes with a touch of a QR
code.
The Fiber, Fabric and Story
exhibit features 11 Central Oregon artists using fiber, mixed
media and other textiles in
surprising ways.
The exhibit includes embroidering, weaving, quilting,
crocheting, felting, dyeing,

printing along with artificial
intelligence and yarn storming.
Materials range from reclaimed linens, lingerie and
knitwear to tree branches,
photographs, COVID masks
and rusty tools.
During Art in Circles, visitors
can participate in a community
art project from 3 to 6 p.m.
The gallery is inside Sunriver
Christian Fellowship, 18139
Cottonwood Road. The gallery
is open 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays
and after Sunriver church services.
Betty Gray Gallery of Art
The Betty Gray Gallery of
Art at Sunriver Resort Lodge is
showing the raku pottery art of
local artist Melissa Woodman
along with paintings by Kay
and Gordon Baker.
Woodman learned about
pottery from her parents who
own Blue Spruce Pottery.
She has been crafting her
own style with raku wall plates
and tiles. Her work carries on
the fun spirit of Blue Spruce
Pottery, a pottery family known
by many for decades.
Kay and Gordon Baker
moved to Bend more than 27
years ago. It didn’t take long for
Gordon to become active in the
community by donating his
time to various organizations.
He enjoyed hiking in the
mountains with his wife and
their dog. He discovered pleinair painting, the perfect combination for his love of the
outdoors.
A prolific studio painter, his
knowledge of geology was an
advantage to painting mountains and waterfalls. He painted
in oils and acrylics. He never
called himself an artist, but
instead a geologist who paints.
Gordon passed away Oct.
2, 2025, and this show is a
memorial to his body of work.
Kay spent most of her early
married years taking care of
their three sons and volunteering in her church and children’s
schools.
Years later, when the older
two sons were off to college,
she began painting and selling
her work.
When they moved to Bend,
she joined SageBrushers Art Society. She was one of the founders of High Desert Art League,
and she and Gordon were two
of the founders of Plein Air
Painters of Oregon. She also
works in oils and pastels.
The Bakers enjoyed trips to
the lakes and mountains where
they would paint the scenery.
There will be a reception in
April to celebrate their work.

visitors are invited to view it in
March at the Resort.
Sunriver Public Safety
Building
Jim Fister and Barb Gonzales
are showing their work at the
Sunriver Public Safety Building, which is open 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. on weekdays.
Fister finds cast-off woods
and creates pieces that allow
the wood grain to show flow
and direction, which creates
composed pieces that highlight
the wood rather than tooling.
Gonzales’ photography high-
lights the local wonders of Central Oregon, showing scenes
that are familiar, but captured
in ways that give the viewer
new appreciation of our wonderful area.
Artists’ Gallery Sunriver
The Artists’ Gallery Sunriver
will host its Second Saturday
reception event from 4 to 6
p.m. Saturday, March 14 in
The Village at Sunriver.
The artists invite everyone
to stop by and enjoy a beverage and snacks while viewing
March’s featured artists.
