TDS fiber internet hookups continue
SROA NEWS – Come 2027,
owners who have not reached
out to TDS for their fiber
internet install to their home
may find themselves without
internet service at all.
At this time, TDS continues
to install fiber “drops” to individual homes. To date, more
than 1,100 homes have been
activated with fiber internet
and are now billed $35/month
through SROA.
TDS will notify an owner by
mail or email when the drop is
ready and will request setting
up an appointment for a service
tech to access inside the home
for the final install, which will
include a new, free router. If
you have not receive an email or
mail from TDS, do not contact
them at this time. TDS has until end of this year to complete
all remaining drops. SROA

Mud and the freeze-thaw cycle
damages area biking trails
By Central Oregon Trails
Alliance
With the low snowpack
this winter season, the area’s
mountain biking trails are experiencing more use than usual
the past few months.
Right now, freeze–thaw cycles are creating tricky conditions that can create significant
tread and trail damage if users
are not careful.
According to the Central
Oregon Trails Alliance, here’s
what is happening:
The soil remains frozen several inches down. When daytime temperatures rise, the
surface thaws while the base
remains frozen. Riding during this thawed window can
leave deep tire tracks. Even if
those ruts appear to smooth
out later, the displaced soil is
when your home may be ready
for connection.
Starting January 2027, all
Sunriver owners will pay SROA
for fiber internet service, regardless of whether they are
hooked up and use it or not.
Under the bulk fiber contract
agreement, the $35 monthly
rate will remain in place for
the next 10 years. Billing for
the fiber internet will be routed
through SROA, not TDS. Any
other services you have through
TDS such as TV or phone, will
still be billed by TDS.
TDS will disconnect any
remaining coaxial internet users
at a yet-to-be-determined date
(likely early 2027).

often lost to erosion from bike
tires and wind – and results in
repair work for COTA volunteers. Riding muddy trails now
equals moon dust conditions
later.
Here’s how you can help:
• If your tires are leaving a
deep track, it’s time to turn
back.
• Ride early in the day before
the trail tread thaws in the early
afternoon.
• Seek out north-facing slopes
or shaded trails with tree cover.
• If you encounter mud or
soft tread, choose a different
route.
A little patience now protects
the riding experience for the
entire season. COTA thanks
everyone for riding thoughtfully and helping steward the
trails everyone loves.
