Final call to get involved in the War on Weeds and help control invasive plants
Noxious weeds are invasive
plants that can cause injury
or harm to public health, agriculture, recreation, wildlife
or property. To protect native
vegetation, foster plant diversity, safeguard wildlife habitat,
and shield both wild and domestic animals from potential
harm, Sunriver owners created
the Sunriver Noxious Weed
Management Plan. The plan
requires owners to control and
prevent the spread of noxious
weeds by removing and/or
stopping them from producing seeds.
Control of the following
noxious weeds is mandatory
in Sunriver:
• Knapweed species
• Toadflax species
• Scotch broom
• Bull thistle, Canada thistle
and Russian thistle
• Note: Removal or management of other species of
noxious weeds may be required if discovered on a
private property.
Each spring, SROA encourages owners to start inspecting
and treating their properties
for noxious weeds when the
plants emerge, and to remain
vigilant throughout the season
as the plants mature, flower and
become more visible.
To assist owners, SROA’s
Natural Resources Department
staff inspect locations where
noxious weeds are known to
have been present in the past.
In July, SROA mailed notices
to owners if noxious weeds
were observed on their prop-
erties, informing them if their
property was not in compliance
with the Sunriver Noxious
Weed Management Plan and
therefore subject to enforcement outlined in the Sunriver
Rules & Regulations.
Owners that did not receive
a notice from SROA about
noxious weeds should not assume there are none present
on their property, as plants
often emerge after staff’s earlyseason inspections. All owners
are responsible for controlling
noxious weeds whether they
hear from SROA or not.
Because the life cycle of a
noxious weed is extremely
short, the window of opportunity to prevent their spread
is already beginning to close.
In mid- to late-August, the
The SunriverHOMES Group
•Over 790 combined transactions*
•$485 million+ in sales volume*
noxious weeds produce and
disperse seeds. The deadline
to control noxious weeds is
rapidly approaching!
SROA Director of Natural
Resources Patti Gentiluomo
shared there are tools and resources available on the SROA
website to help owners identify noxious weeds and learn
the best way to remove or
control them.
“Additionally, a managed
noxious weed garden at the
SROA Administration Building allows owners to see some
of the most common types of
noxious weeds in Sunriver,”
Gentiluomo said.
Owners may contact Natural
Resources staff with questions
about noxious weeds at naturalresources@srowners.org or
541-593-1522.
By controlling noxious
weeds, owners will be protecting the native vegetation on
their lots and in the community, and ensuring their properties remain in compliance with
the Sunriver Noxious Weed
Management Plan.
SROA also controls noxious weeds on commons and
undertakes both targeted
spraying and pulling activities throughout the season.
Owners that want to get even
more involved with noxious
weed control in Sunriver can
sign up at www.sunriverowners.org/noxiousweeds to be a
volunteer in SROA’s annual
“War on Weeds” (Aug. 1-14,
as individual schedules allow)
to help pull spotted knapweed
on commons.
