August Scene - Flipbook - Page 32
Plan for an emergency, then adventure in Sunriver
By Jim Bennet
We hope you are having a
wonderful summer.
At the time of this writing,
the weather was beautiful with
the temperatures not too hot,
the evenings just right and no
wildfire smoke!
Speaking of smoke, it's only
August which means we have
extremely dry conditions.
While an occasional thunderstorm can drop significant
rain in a short period of time,
it’s generally a relatively small
geographic spot and, with a
thirsty forest, the ground will
dry out in days.
A dry thunderstorm can really
be a catalyst to fire as it spreads
across the desert striking trees
with little to no precipitation.
That being said, emergency
services hope to never have
to call for an evacuation, but
preparedness is far better than
guessing and wondering what
to do next when you hear the
evacuation levels and other
news that makes the hair stand
up on the back of your neck.
Be aware of the three
evacuation levels:
Level 1: This is the “be ready”
phase. Do not take the notice
lightly by thinking you have
time. Conditions and levels can
change rapidly.
When you prepare, start with
your most important preparations and work your way down,
knowing that Level 2 or 3 could
happen at any time.
This is when you should place
your grab-and-go bag in the car
or by the front door.
Go through your house making sure you have your important documents and other items
that you want to take with you.
Double check you are registered at SunriverEmergencyInfo.com for emergency alerts and
Seamless Rain & Snow Gutters
evacuation notices.
Level 2: Being “set” is what
Level 2 is all about.
Continue to monitor news
reports and Deschutes County
and Sunriver emergency alerts.
You should be completely prepared with the items you need to
take and ready to communicate
your evacuation plan on where
you plan to go once you leave
your home.
Level 3: This means go now!
There is absolutely no time to
waste.
Listen and look for directions
(emergency alerts, news, emergency services in the neighborhood) and follow directions.
As you leave the area, there
will likely be emergency services
personnel and signs directing
your exit.
Follow their directions. Emergency managers are looking at
the big picture of what’s happening currently and predicting
what may happen.
Let’s talk about a couple of
different scenarios that are important to think about before
an emergency happens.

6-10 - Sunriver Police Department noticed during a security check that a
back glass door at SHARC was shattered. Officers cleared the building. No
suspects were indentified at the time.
6-20 - SPD received a call for service regarding a mule or horse that had
jumped a fence and entered the airport property. The animal was located
and safely brought back into the fenced area.
6-22 - SRPD was dispatched to a missing/endangered person. Along with
DCSO and DCSO Search & Rescue, they searched for about 4 hours before
locating the person. The person was found to be confused but otherwise
unharmed. The person was returned to family members.
6-25 - SPD received a report of a scam involving fraudulent rental listings
on Craigslist. The reporting party stated that an unknown individual had
posted properties that did not belong to them. The posts were identified and
removed before any potential victims were defrauded. At this time, there is
no contact information for the suspect.
6-26 - SPD responded to a report of a possible scam/fraud. The reporting
party stated they had received several small donations from the same
individual, each made with a different credit card. The reporting party was
concerned that the activity might be fraudulent or an attempt to compromise their online payment system. No crime or victims were identified at the
time of this report.
