Shadows and shooting stars: A late summer delight for star gazers
As sunset begins earlier and
the days grow shorter, night
viewing becomes easier as dark
skies arrive around 9 p.m. In
addition to this earlier start
time, the center of the Milky
Way is visible and reaches its
highest point just over an hour
after sunset, giving us some of
our most stunning views of
stars and nebulae. Along with
these wonderful views, there are
a few events occurring in August to look forward to as well.
Although not visible from
Oregon, the Moon will pass in
front of the Sun, blocking its
light in what is called a total
solar eclipse. This event will
be visible from Greenland,
Iceland, and northern Spain.
It is the first eclipse to pass
through mainland Europe since
1999, making it a similar experience to the Great American
Eclipse of 2017.
As if one eclipse weren't
enough, August also brings
the most anticipated meteor
shower of the year, the Perseids.
This event typically produces
60–100 meteors per hour,
along with the occasional fireball lasting several seconds. In
addition, the shower takes place
during a new Moon, when the
Moon sets with the Sun, giving
us the darkest possible skies for
viewing. The Perseids peak on
Aug. 12, and like all meteor

showers, the best way to view
them is by lying on a blanket
in an open field after midnight.
At the end of the month, we
will be able to see a different
type of eclipse at least partially.
Just after sunset on Aug. 27, the
Moon will pass through Earth's
shadow. From Central Oregon,
9:12 p.m. will be the peak of
the eclipse, with about 96% of
the Moon in Earth's shadow.

Summer evening programs
often sell out quickly, so we
encourage guests to reserve

programs are full, visit us during the day to safely observe

Owner Enrichment Committee hosts its annual daffodil bulb fall sale
By Mark Fisler
It may only be August, but
it’s time to start thinking about
daffodils blooming next spring.
Now in its fifth year, the
Sunriver Owner Enrichment
Committee (OEC) is once
again sponsoring daffodil bulb
sales with plans to distribute
12,000 bulbs to bring spring
color and joy to Sunriver.
Why is the committee encouraging planting daffodils?
There are many reasons,
including they are beautiful
harbingers of spring and deer
do not eat them.
The OEC has again ordered daffodil bulbs from the
Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in
Woodburn. All the varieties feature large blooms, and
most are repeats from last year.
Wooden Shoe is a family-run
Oregon farm, which grows 80
varieties of tulips and perennials on its 40 acres.
Remarkably, Wooden Shoe
has been able to hold the price
of the bulbs unchanged at $1/
bulb for the fifth year in a row.
Interested owners can preorder
in the range of 20 to 250 bulbs.
The bulbs are being sold at cost
to the OEC.
To order bulbs, send an
email to SunriverDaffodils@
gmail.com with the number
of bulbs you want, your name
and physical Sunriver address.
Payment will be due by cash or
check when you pick up your

bulbs. Final instructions will be
sent in early October.
The current expectation is for
owners to pick up their bulbs
on Saturday, Oct. 10 from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m. at the SROA
administration parking lot, but
a confirmed date will be issued
when the bulb pickup date
from Wooden Shoe is finalized.
You cannot preselect the bulbs
you want since they are distributed on a first come, first served
basis. Labeled bags are provided
or you can bring your own. You
will simply show up, select your
bulbs, and fill your own order
allotment – easy.
It’s never too early to think
about spring 2027.
