Pétanque Club held indoor tournament to benefit Bend Food Project
The Sunriver Pétanque Club
celebrated its inaugural indoor
Mardi Gras Tournament in
February, blending spirited
competition with community
outreach.
The event featured exceptional play and camaraderie,
but the real highlight was the
collective effort to combat local
hunger.
In lieu of a traditional entry
fee, participants provided donations to The Giving Plate,
which supports food-insecure
residents in Deschutes County.
Through the efforts of the club
and the Bend Food Project, the
tournament generated significant results:
• Club contribution: 48
pounds of food
• Sunriver community total:
497 pounds
• Central Oregon impact:
20,270 total pounds received
at the warehouse
Thank you to everyone who
participated and contributed
to this successful event. These
donations ensure that the spirit
of Mardi Gras – celebration
and generosity – reaches those
in our community who need
it most.
The Bend Food Project uses
a simple “Green Bag” system to
support The Giving Plate and
local families in need. You can
help in two easy ways:
• Become a donor: Fill a
provided green bag with non-
perishable food as you shop
throughout the month.
Every two months, simply
leave the bag on your porch
for pickup.
• Become a neighborhood coordinator: Spend
about an hour every two
months collecting green
bags from your immediate
neighbors and dropping
them off at a central site.

Why now?
Construction costs have
surged dramatically over the
past five to seven years, and the
wish list for owners continues
to grow. An indoor sports
complex, upgraded parks, new
regional parks for underserved
areas of Sunriver, expanded
social spaces and long-awaited
pathway connections are just
some of the projects delayed
due to the lack of dedicated
funding. This fee would finally
give those dreams a financial
foundation and allow them to
come to fruition sooner.
The approach also has an
inherent logic to it: new owners arriving in Sunriver benefit
from facilities and amenities
built and paid for by existing
owners – this fee represents
their contribution to the community they're buying into and
helps ensure the value of their
investment into the future.
