Time to prep and protect your property
By Jim Bennett
Spring is in the air! April
can be a beautiful transitional
month – sometimes we see the
last remnants of wintry weather
mixed with welcome warmth
and clear skies.
This is the month where
wildfire season preparedness
becomes the big conversation.
Not only a conversation,
but a call to action. We have
our second annual Wildfire
Preparedness Fair, with many
partners including the Oregon
State Fire Marshal's Office.
It is from noon to 2 pm.
Thursday, April 16 at SHARC,
57250 Overlook Road. This
is an excellent opportunity to
get energized for summer fire
prevention, ask questions and
get the information you need
to keep your home safe.
As temps warm up,
barbecues fire up
In early spring, our barbe-
cues begin calling out to us,
and we're more than ready to
answer (other than those who
never let winter stop them in
the first place).
The rules for using a barbecue
have not changed: no charcoal
or wood barbecues are allowed
anywhere in Sunriver.
While they can smell great,
the fire risk in our dry forest is
simply too high.
Please strictly follow Sunriver
rules prohibiting charcoal and
wood barbecues. Pellet, gas and
electric barbecues are permitted
under Sunriver rules.
Even with approved barbecues, fire risk doesn't disappear
entirely. Start with a quick
three-point check before you
fire up:
• Look up: If something
on the grill were to catch fire
or sparks were to fly, what's
above it?
• Look around: Are there
flammables nearby that could

catch a stray spark or an errant
piece of food?
• Look down: Is the grill on
stable, level ground and is there
anything underneath that poses
a fire or tip-over risk?
Place a fire-resistant pan under the barbecue to catch grease
and falling debris and clean
those grease traps regularly.
These are small steps that make
a real difference.
Looking beyond the grill,
it's time for that first-of-season
exterior fire safety walk.

Association website – www.

typreparedness – for information specific to our community,
including forest debris removal,
rules governing plants and trees
and more.
Because Sunriver has specific
codes governing yards and
home exteriors, it's important
to know before you act.
